Course content
|
Lectures: 1) Book and its parts - physical description, terminology and definitions, production, decoration. 2) Predecessors of printed books, manuscripts. Writing and its development in general (from pictograms to graphemes). 3) Writing materials, means and their carriers (stone, wood, textile, papyrus, parchment and paper). 4) Forms of the book in Czech history since the Middle Ages (incunabula, paleotypes, heirlooms, facsimiles, falsehoods). 5) From author to reader: printer, bookseller, librarian. Relation to books in intellectual and rural environments (bibliophilia and bibliophobia). 6) Storage of books (libraries, museums, archives, private collections) and types of libraries then and now (noble, bourgeois and church libraries; state, private), care of books. 7) The book as a historian's source (research on the book as a social phenomenon): a means of memory fixation, representation and sustenance.

Learning outcomes
|
The subject is devoted to a selected topic from earlier history. The course The book as a historical source aims to acquaint students with the development of book culture in the Czech lands and Central Europe from the second half of the 15th century to the beginning of the 20th century. The interpretation will primarily shed light on the genesis and continuity of Czech book creation. It will focus on letterpress and bookbinding terminology, the specifics of the craft and field. Using the examples of selected printers from Prague and other localities in the Czech countries, students will learn about the financing of printing, the technical processing of a book, the social impact of increased reproduction of information (censorship, press bans, criminal prosecution of authors and book publishers). At the same time, the graduates of the course will gain an overview of the basic bibliographic literature and the usefulness of old prints as a multifaceted source of the historian's research.
The subject is also designed as a practical one - as part of working with old prints. During the exercise, cataloging of old and rare prints from the funds in the Regional Science Library in Liberec takes place.
